Tips to Improve Your Digestion

Updated: Mar 19, 2023

Do you have great digestion?

If you do then presumably, nothing bothers your stomach (no bloating, no gas), you are not sensitive to foods, you have 2 or 3 bowel movements in a day without straining, your hair  is shiny, your skin is clear, your nails are strong, your energy is amazing and you are coasting along pretty happy.  That would be nice, wouldn’t it?

I have some suggestions to help get you there.

1. Avoid overeating.  The old saying, ‘Eat less, Live longer’ really is true.  Research shows that people tend to eat too much, for whatever reasons, so leaving the table a little hungry may be just the thing that you need to do. Remember that it takes about 20 minutes for your brain to let you know that you are full.  Stop eating before you are stuffed. Your body will thank you. 2. Try probiotics.  Our digestive health is improved when our gut has plenty of good bacteria to speed up the process.  Our immune system is also strengthened when good bacteria are around.  Try adding some raw sauerkraut to your daily diet or take a reputable probiotic. 3. Stay hydrated.  Lots of water will keep your digestive system and over-all health in good working order.  You will know that you are getting enough water when your pee is clear all day.

4. Exercise every day.  A brisk 30 minutes walk daily or a nice bike ride will increase the blood flow in your body which will strengthen the muscles in your GI tract.  This will speed up digestion and keep your body happy.

5. Slow down.  Take your time when eating.  Try chewing each bite at least 20 times and work your way up to 50 chews per bite.  Your food will then be partially digested before it gets to the stomach, making things easier for your digestive system.  You will also be less inclined to eat too much (your jaws won’t want any more!  Ha!).  Gandhi said, ‘Chew your drink and drink your food’.

Remember that the quality of your digestion can be an indication of the quality of your overall health.  Pay attention when your skin isn’t the way you want it to be.  Often it is a mirror of the digestive tract.  Take extra care by drinking lots of water,  considering your food choices and taking your time while eating.
